Amaury de la Roche

Amaury de la Roche was part of the brotherhood of the Knights Templar and lived in France. He was witness to Pope Clement making a statement on oath with a number of other brothers.Along with this, Amaury witnessed a number of other confessions from the brothers, which made him a key witness during the Templar trial.2

Amaury had close relations with both the Pope and the King of France. This puts him in an unusual position, as he was privy to important information on both sides of a rather secretive debate. Amaury had the unique position of being a confidant for both King Philip IV and Pope Clement V.  Amaury was a Templar grand preceptor. King Louis LX personally asked the pope to give him this position and the current Grand Preceptor agreed to step down so that Amaury could have the position.3
